Job Description

Come join the university voted #1 in innovation in the United States four years in a row!  ASU Library is looking for a dedicated professional to join a team devoted to collaborative development of software to support the library's mission of creating, preserving, and making digital resources discoverable. The digital library software engineer will imagine, create, and sustain infrastructure, applications, and services for ASU’s digital repository and online services. S/he will work alongside faculty, librarians, and IT colleagues across campus and within open-source communities on projects that advance research, teaching, and learning.

Essential Duties

Contributes to the development of software infrastructure for a rapidly expanding suite of information and knowledge management services through systems design, implementation, and maintenance of applications that enable storage, discovery, and dissemination of information and digital assets held in ASU repositories and external systems. Configures and optimizes open source software and engages in collaborative activities. Reviews systems and software designs and prepares and conducts functional tests. Executes procedures and standards for accessibility, quality assurance, and scalability. Creates and maintains internal documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely related field AND two (2) years previous experience in software applications development; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theory and principles of software design and architecture their practical expression in expression in multi-tiered application frameworks
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theory and principles of database design and SQL RDBMS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental networking and distributed computing concepts
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research data management and/or data repositories Experience with identity management, authentication, SAML
  • Working knowledge of semantic web/linked data technologies such as RDF, SPARQL, and OWL
  • Experience generating and maintaining documentation
  • Experience with software version control, test-driven development and continuous integration services
  • Demonstrated knowledge with image, audio, video, and text file formats
  • Experience in encoding/decoding/transcoding and related metadata schemas
  • Experience with open-source systems and tools such as Fedora, Hyrax, and Islandora or Drupal
  • Experience working with cloud services such as AWS
  • Experience with object-oriented programming
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common security vulnerabilities and how to mitigate them
  • Demonstrated knowledge with open source preservation and archival tools like archivematica and archivesspace
  • Experience with PHP and related frameworks such as Symfony


 

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%) Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals. Receives managerial review of assignments for adherence to established objectives and goals.
